Annual Report 2008 and Financial statements
Investing in energy efficiency in Ukraine. Adopting a new mortgage law in Moldova. Boosting meat production in Montenegro. Promoting agribusiness in Mongolia. The Annual Report 2008 demonstrates how the EBRD uses its investments, expertise and knowledge across sectors to bring sustainable growth and transition in its countries of operations from central Europe to central Asia. The year 2008 was an historic watershed: within twelve months the world moved from rapid economic expansion to the most severe contraction in living memory. These developments are arguably the biggest challenge the EBRD’s countries of operations have faced since the Bank was established in 1991. As the Report shows, the EBRD has reacted to the crisis with speed and resilience: available where and when finance and risk-appetite are needed to promote recovery and sustained growth.

Sustainability Report 2008
Sustainability underlies all EBRD investments: the Bank applies sound banking principles to all its operations, considers environmental, social and governance issues when approving new projects and encourages open dialogue and participation with key stakeholders. The Sustainability Report 2008 focuses on the Bank’s impact on people and the environment in its countries of operations and also describes how the Bank operates internally. It highlights the EBRD’s sustainability initiatives and projects and demonstrates that in a time of financial crisis the EBRD is even more ready to contribute to and achieve sustainable development. The Report covers all aspects of sustainable development, including environmental issues and wider social issues such as health and safety, gender, community impacts, human rights, stakeholder relations and corporate governance.

Donor Report 2009
The Donor Report 2009 highlights the crucial partnership between EBRD and its donors and official co-financiers in furthering transition in the Bank’s countries of operations. As the Bank moves further south and east in its operations, the role and contribution of donor support becomes even more critical, with the greatest challenge in the poorest, most highly indebted countries. Donor support for the Bank’s programmes is wide-ranging, from financing energy efficiency to ensuring nuclear safety, facilitating trade flows and encouraging gender equality and women’s participation in business. In 2008 the value of the EBRD’s partnership with donors was underlined as the economic crisis began to bite. As the EBRD looks to the challenging period ahead, it is clear that a concerted team effort with donors is crucial as the Bank rolls out its operational crisis response to countries and business clients in the region.

Law in transition 2009 - Corporate governance in banking | Turkey
Legal reform is a core dimension of the EBRD's work. The Bank’s activities focus on the development of the legal rules, institutions and culture on which a vibrant market-oriented economy depends. Published twice a year by the Legal Transition Programme, Law in transition provides extensive coverage of legal developments in the region and aims to be a leading source of ideas for strengthening legal frameworks in the transition countries of eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia. This latest issue of the journal focuses on two themes: corporate governance in the banking sector and Turkey, which became an EBRD country of operations in November 2008. Law in transition 2009 assesses selected components of Turkey’s commercial law, looks at the main transition challenges faced by the country, describes recent structural reform and examines its associated legal aspects.

Sustainable Energy Initiative
Energy is a strategic focus for the EBRD. The Bank is at the forefront in helping countries from central Europe to central Asia secure sustainable energy supplies. Through the Sustainable Energy Initiative (SEI) the Bank finances the efficient use of energy that will cut demand and imports, reduce pollution and mitigate the effects of climate change. The illustrated booklet summarises the activities and achievements of Phase 1 of the SEI (2006 to 2008) and highlights specific SEI projects with carbon reduction impacts in the industrial, energy and infrastructure sectors.
